Hey man I had a great time out a Paraiso with you guys. Thank you so much for all the instruction and encouragement. You are by far the best kite instructor I have met and damn fun to be around. I though Bjorn(?) was excellent as well and a fine addition to your team. He has a great deal of respect for you and strives for the same excellence as you. Extreme Control!

Come and join us for a true meditative zen experience while cruising through the lagoons of the famous Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Our half day tour will take you through the calm waters of the Boca Paila lagoon, through lush mangrove canals and out into the boca (mouth ) of the river and into the Caribbean ocean. This is time to really get away from everything and enjoy some quiet time in nature while getting a mellow workout paddling among the nature of the reserve. The scenery is unbelievable and the sunsets unforgettable….The best part is that you can reflect on the beauty of nature without leaving a trace…a truly “eco” experience leaving behind only the ripple of your paddle…. New Adventures of Extreme Control
Extreme Control Travel is on a new adventure seeking out the kiteboarding possibilities in the world! Traveling in different locations Italy, Mexico, Brazil, USA, Dominican Republic and now Honduras, we find great new riding spots and meet wonderful people.
We are now offering our new Personalized Deluxe Training Service where we travel
to teach students in their location. We can assess unique environments and help find the appropriate locations for different levels of riders. If you don’t have time to travel we will come to you!
We were recently invited to a resort near La Ceiba, Honduras to explore the area and teach our host, Mauricio, the art of kiteboarding. Traveling to Honduras, we were excited to visit a whole new country. Our flight took us through three countries Guatemala, El Salvador and finally Honduras all covered in an expansive growth of jungle. We landed at night into the open arms of our sponsors Mauricio and Rosa. We drove to our resort about half an hour outside of La Ceiba and were updated on the political situation of Honduras as well as the possibilities of discovering un -charted kiting areas. We arrived to a typical all-inclusive room at the Palma Real. We were tired after 5 flights to arrive in Honduras and slept well after the day of travel.

The wind ended up not arriving the next day so we made a plan to look for the wind farther out in the ocean near the famous islands of Utila and Roatan. We looked at our options for searching out the wind and Mauricio suggested we look at the archipelago closer to the coast, Cayos Cochinos, a marine reserve. You can see the islands jutting out of the ocean in the distance and you immediately feel a pull to explore the island life and kiting possibilities.
We investigated to see if there might be an opportunity to ride in the pristine wildness of the reserve so we arranged a meeting with the director of the Fundacion de Cayos Cochinos, Adrian. He was very welcoming and was open to the idea but we needed
to do a reconnaissance mission first to assess the dangers and see if the islands offered what we were looking for…..
The next day we were on a mission. We had made preparations to have a very knowledgeable captain, Exon, pick us up in the morning at the dock built for ”Surviver” the television show . We arrived at the dock the next morning which looked like it had survived its own drama. The waves were too big for the boat to dock there so El Capitan headed straight for the shore in a kamakaze kind of fashion and then landed perfectly on the shore. We loaded up and headed out to the islands over long ocean swells and anticipating an opportunity to kite.

We arrived at the tourist center and attempted to get permission to launch the kite but were told that it would require looking a little deeper into the management plan of the reserve. So, we were allowed to explore…. Exon took us around every Cayo and showed us where the reef was, the sandy bottoms, the waves, the currents and in all gave us a very thorough and knowledgeable tour of the reserve.

We stopped in on Chachahuate island where a very “local” Garífuna community was living in small shacks surrounded by the sea. We took a tour of the island which consisted of about 10 steps to the windward side of the island and the wind was blowing. We couldn’t kite there so we thought we would head back to the mainland and try to catch some wind before the end of the day. We rode back above and below the swells and were back in an hour’s time to find we had no wind on the coast……A great adventure but we had not reached our goal…..kiting.
So, back to the drawing board to see how we were going to catch the wind the next day. After a long discussion we decided to go to Roatan for a couple of days. This involved a bit of logistics to be done so we decided we would catch the afternoon ferry the next day and hope for wind in Palma Real during the day.
Well, the wind god was listening because around 10 in the morning the wind picked up and we grabbed the equipment and went looking for Mauricio. Yikes, he had gone into the city La Ceiba to take care of some of the “planning ” for our trip. We decided to head to the beach and were pleased to find another kiter in the water. Marco jumped in the water to assess the local conditions and Mauricio arrived later to start the lesson. We were taught the valuable kiting lesson: you must be ready when the wind decides to blow….
The lone mystery kiter took off down wind and we watched him fly into the distance. Where was he going? Mauricio remembered that maybe he had a hotel down the way so that night we went searching for him because surely he’ll know the best spots. We met up with him for dinner and he said there was a place by the mouth of the River Congrejal where we could maybe find ideal flat -water conditions. It was half an hour away so we decided that would be the best option. We canceled the Roatan trip and put our bets on having wind the next day along the mainland. Well, it didn’t work out as planned but we enjoyed a nice day at the river mouth and enjoyed some drinks in La Ceiba.
The next day there was no wind so we headed up into the mountains to the Lodge at Pico Bonito. It is a famous birding area and a well-known lodge where you can relax in the serenity of the lush tropical jungle. After a delicious lunch we decided to go on a hike up to the waterfalls and swimming pools. We had a fist hand lesson of why they call it a “rainforest”. We were caught in a deluge and got soaked through and through and had a very comic adventure. We raced back after our jungle experience for some real hot chocolate and then headed back down the mountain.
Our last day in Honduras was coming to an end and we decided to stop off in Sambo Creek for a gigantic bowl, Sopa Marinera, which was spilling over with legs and fins and tails and you couldn’t tell what animal lay beneath the next. We ended the day passing through the Garifuna community and watching a little bit of the local festival. Another adventure to say the least and thanks to our very energetic and unique hosts Mauricio and Rosa for introducing us to Honduras.
